About Outdoors with Carly

Who we are

Outdoors with Carly has come around because of my love of the great outdoors and the health benefits that come with that – both physical and mental.

Being outside and/or exercising has huge benefits - it can lower stress, blood pressure and heart rate which improves your sense of well-being. The great outdoors has amazing positive effects on its own but add exercise to the mix and these positive effects are exacerbated. People who exercise regularly get a huge sense of satisfaction. I have never regretted going for a run but do occasionally regret not going for that run…

Studies have indicated that you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic and that age and fitness level don’t generally matter.  A moderate activity for a relatively short amount of time will boost your mood. A recent study by Harvard T.H. Chan school of public health found that running for 15 minutes a day or walking for an hour reduces the risk of major depression by 26% in addition to relieving symptoms. Also, maintaining an exercise schedule can prevent relapse.

As a general rule, humans like being with other humans so exercising in a group makes people feel good, exercise keeps our bodies fitter and healthier which gives confidence.

From talking to people I am finding the biggest difficulty for many people is getting out of the door; its so much warmer in the house or more comfy in pyjamas, lack of motivation or tiredness, some people feel uncomfortable or don’t like unfamiliar surroundings. Exercising in groups gives accountability as well as friendship and something in common with everyone else in the group.

Activity & What It Can Do For You

Outdoors with Carly, bringing the world of fitness to you.

CONFIDENCE

Having control of your fitness makes a huge difference to your life and your confidence.  Of course there is also the obvious "Happy Hormones" which make you feel calmer and help control your pain receptors.

BETTER SLEEP

We all know the benefits of getting better sleep.  The phrase "Sleep is a healer" couldn't be more true.

A good night's sleep will improve your concentration, keep you heart healthy, help you maintain a healthy weight and will allow your body to heal or fight infection.

IMPROVE YOUR HEART

Running, or jogging, is one of the best cardio exercises you can do. Running for at least 10 minutes a day can significantly lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. Runners lower their chances of dying from heart disease by half.

It also lowers your resting heart rate, the number of times your heart beats per minute when you’re at rest. This is an important indicator of your overall health and fitness. The lower the rate, the more efficient your heartbeat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to have run before?

No, my beginners class is aimed at complete beginners or people who may have some running experience but haven’t run for a very long time.

What Clothing do you recommend?

I often get asked which the best trainers are but that is not a simple answer as different people prefer different brands and trainer styles. I would recommend going to a shop that sells various different shoes and trying several pairs on and seeing which you prefer. Specialist running shops often do gait analysis and may allow you to run on a treadmill wearing different trainers.

Clothes need to be comfortable and easy to move, I recommend sports clothing as this is usually made from ‘technical’ fabrics which keep you comfortable for physical activity. I always ask people to wear bright clothing as we will be running on the streets and we need to be seen by cars and other people. In the winter I ask everyone to wear a running chest or head torch as this not only makes you more visible to cars etc, it also highlights potential trip hazards so makes running in the dark safer.

For ladies I do also recommend a good quality, high impact sports bra.

What if I can't keep up?

Nobody gets left behind! It often happens that some people are naturally faster than others, even total beginners. This is not a problem, I can make sure we stay close together whilst allowing people to run at their preferred pace.

Can I book into the beginners group whilst it is part way through?

The usual answer to this is no but please contact me to ask if you do have some running experience. It is very difficult for a complete beginner to start when the group is, for example, half way through the course as people will be too different in running ability at that stage.
